Sights of Kaposvár

County Somogy and its seats, Kaposvár are  situated amid the varied Southern Transdanubian hills, enclosed by the river Dráva and Lake Balaton. The history of the Zselic slopes and Kaposvár, lying ont he seven hills by the river Kapos, dates back to the evolution of the Hungarian state. This fact is proved by the historic monuments from that area – the Benedictine Abbey in Kaposszentjakab and the ancient smelter in Somogyfajsz, which attract a number of visitors in their beautiful surroundings. Travellers can be fascinated by various historical monuments and the ethnographic and natural values of the settlements of Somogy.Egg-decorating in Somogyvámos and an archery show evoking the period of Hungarian conquest in Kaposdada are considered special attractions. The tourist attraction of the county is complemented by Kaposvár’s colourful cultural life, along with various leisure activities offering a wide range of programmes to everyone’s liking.

The development of the town centre started during the second part of the 19th century and was completed by the first decades of the 20th century. The houses – built in ecletic style and  Art Nouveau – are not of high architectural value, but with streets lined with different species of trees, the centre reflects a special atmosphere. The citizens of Kaposvárare proud of the intimate promenade, the rebuilt Kossuth square, where the chiming clocks of the Town Hall are echoed a,omg spectacular fountains.

The museum – furnished with the original furniture and more  than ninety works of art – gives an insight into the painting periods of the artist. The brother of József Rippl-Rónai collected the works of the most prominent artists of 20th century Hungarian painting. Later  he donated this valued collection to the community and thus founded the present collection of the Somogy County Museum.  http://smmi.hu/
